HISTORY

Castles amid rolling landscapes, quiet hamlets and overgrown ruins. History is all around you. Locals still use the name Périgord. This is what this fairytale region was called before the 18th century. History revives before your eyes in the castles, bastides and prehistoric sites dating back as far as 150,000 years BC.

The Dordogne has few inhabitants. The impressive, varied landscape of rivers, forests and fields defines the atmosphere, along with the villages. Most villages and towns are still in authentic condition. These are sights in themselves and are among the most beautiful attractions of the Périgord Noir.

RESTAURANTS

Do you enjoy dining out chic in a castle, or opt for a romantic dinner on the banks of the Dordogne? Or rather on that cosy terrace in the village square… or at a picnic table in the oak forest… Do you like local dishes with authentic products such as duck, lamb, not to mention truffles, nuts and strawberries? Or do you prefer something more familiar? You will find it all in the Dordogne! There are many restaurants here, for all tastes, at all levels and in all price ranges.

ACTIVITIES & SPORTS

Despite or precisely because of its tranquillity, the Périgord Noir is a paradise for active holidaymakers. Go down the Dordogne or Vézère rivers in a canoe and experience the region from the water. Or book a balloon flight: an experience you will never forget. Or do you prefer to climb up an impressive rock face? The Dordogne has several adventure parks for all ages.In the area there are several golf courses, from 9 to 18 holes. Walkers and sporty cyclists can enjoy beautiful routes along castles, caves and historical sites. And of course there are many routes through beautiful forests and fields.

SHOPPING

Shopping may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Dordogne. Yet there is plenty of shopping in this region. In the villages, you will find charming shops selling regional products. Furthermore, many villages have markets on different days. And a visit to a Brocante is very typically French. Want a day of serious shopping in a real city? Then the historic city of Perigueux is a must. The city has an atmospheric, medieval city centre with narrow car-free streets. On the outskirts of this city you will find French and international chain shops.
